Equipment

  • 1 sheet pan
  • 1 cast iron skillet

Method

Prep and bake
  1. Preheat the oven to 350F and generously butter a 9x13 baking dish.
  2. Toss the apple slices with granulated sugar, all-purpose flour, and cinnamon, then pour them into the baking dish.
  3. Combine flour, rolled oats, both sugars, cinnamon, baking powder, and salt for the crumble topping.
  4. Cut in the cold cubed butter with your hands until the mixture forms large, butter-streaked clumps.
  5. Pour and spread the topping evenly over the apples to fully cover the surface.
  6. Bake for 55-60 minutes until the topping is golden brown and the apple filling bubbles at the edges.
  7. Serve warm with whipped cream or ice cream on the side.

Notes

Pro tip: keep the butter very cold so the crumble bakes into bigger, clumpier pieces instead of a fine sandy texture. Store covered in the refrigerator for up to 4 days; reheat portions in the oven or microwave until warmed through. Freezing is okay for up to 2 months—thaw overnight in the fridge and rewarm. For a lighter option, use half the butter in the topping with a 1:1 swap of cold coconut oil.
