  • 0.25 tsp allspice

  • 2 tbsp lemon juice
Farm-style crumble topping
  • 2 cup rolled oats
  • 1.5 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1.5 cup brown sugar, packed
  • 2 tsp cinnamon
  • 0.25 tsp salt
  • 1 lb unsalted butter, cold
  • 1 vanilla ice cream or whipped cream

Equipment

  • 1 sheet pan

Method

Preheat and prepare the dish
  1. Preheat oven to 350F and generously grease a 9x13 baking dish.
Make the apple filling
  1. Toss apple slices with granulated sugar, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice, cornstarch, and lemon juice, then spread in the prepared dish in a thick layer.
Make the farm-style crumble topping
  1. Combine rolled oats, all-purpose flour, brown sugar, cinnamon, and salt, then work in cold butter with your hands until large, butter-streaked clumps form (keep the mixture cold as you mix).
Bake the crisp
  1. Pour and spread the crumble topping generously over the apples, piling it thick.
Bake until bubbling and golden
  1. Bake for 50-55 minutes, until the topping is deeply golden and the apple filling bubbles all around.
Rest and serve
  1. Rest for 15 minutes before scooping, then serve with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream.

Notes

For clean scoops, rest the crisp at least 15 minutes so the apple juices thicken. Refrigerate leftovers covered up to 4 days; reheat in a 350F oven until warmed through. Freezing is yes—freeze portions up to 2 months and thaw overnight in the fridge before reheating. For a lighter option, use half the butter in the crumble and replace it with an equal amount of cold unsweetened applesauce, then bake as directed.
