Ingredients

ground beef (80/20)
  • 1.5 lb ground beef
  • Salt
  • pepper
  • garlic powder
  • onion powder
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
lettuce and toppings
  • 4 cup shredded romaine or iceberg lettuce
  • 1 cup cherry tomatoes, halved
  • 0.5 red onion, thinly sliced
  • 1 cup dill pickle slices
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
fries and sauce
  • 2 cup frozen fries or tater tots, cooked crispy
  • 0.5 cup mayonnaise
  • 2 tbsp ketchup
  • 1 tbsp yellow mustard
  • 1 tbsp sweet pickle relish
  • 1 tsp apple cider vinegar
  • Sesame seeds for garnish

Equipment

  • 1 cast iron skillet

Method

Make the special sauce
  1. Whisk together mayonnaise, ketchup, yellow mustard, sweet pickle relish, and apple cider vinegar until smooth, then refrigerate so it thickens slightly.
Brown the beef
  1. Season ground beef with salt, pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, and Worcestershire sauce, then cook in a skillet over medium-high heat, breaking into large crumbles, for 6-8 minutes until deeply browned.
  2. Drain the fat from the skillet so the beef stays craggy and not greasy.
Cook fries or tots
  1. Cook frozen fries or tater tots until extra crispy following package directions, then let them stand briefly so they stay crunchy.
Assemble burger bowls
  1. Layer each bowl with a base of shredded romaine or iceberg lettuce.
  2. Top the lettuce with beef crumbles, then add cherry tomatoes, thinly sliced red onion, and dill pickle slices.
  3. Add a generous layer of shredded cheddar cheese over the toppings.
  4. Pile on crispy fries or tater tots last to preserve crunch.
  5. Drizzle the special sauce generously in a dramatic zigzag over the entire colorful loaded surface.
  6. Scatter sesame seeds for garnish and serve immediately.

Notes

For best texture, cook fries/tots right before assembling and keep sauce chilled until the moment you drizzle. Store leftovers covered in the refrigerator up to 3 days (assemble lettuce fresh if possible); freezer: no for assembled bowls. For a lighter option, use 90% lean ground beef and reduced-fat cheddar to lower calories without losing the classic burger-bowl vibe.
